Philabundance
Philabundance
Philabundance is a non-profit food bank that serves the Delaware Valley and Philadelphia region. It was established in 1984 with the mission to drive hunger from our communities today and end hunger forever. Philabundance provides food to approximately 90,000 people each week, through a network of 350 member agencies including shelters, social service agencies, and food pantries.
History[edit | edit source]
Philabundance was founded in 1984 by an idealistic Philadelphia resident named Pamela Rainey Lawler, who saw perfectly good food going to waste and decided to do something about it. She began by rescuing food from local restaurants and retailers, and delivering it to local emergency kitchens.
Services[edit | edit source]
Philabundance offers a variety of services to help combat hunger in the Delaware Valley and Philadelphia region. These services include:
- Emergency Food Boxes: Philabundance provides emergency food boxes to individuals and families in need. These boxes contain a variety of non-perishable food items, such as canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, and cereal.
- Fresh For All: This program provides fresh produce to individuals and families in need. Each week, Philabundance distributes fresh fruits and vegetables at various locations throughout the region.
- Grocers Against Hunger: In partnership with local grocery stores, Philabundance rescues surplus food that would otherwise go to waste. This food is then distributed to individuals and families in need.
- Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP): This federal program provides low-income seniors with a monthly box of food. Philabundance administers this program in the Delaware Valley and Philadelphia region.
