Pickleback

Pickleback is a type of shot in which a shot of whiskey is chased by a shot of pickle brine. The term "pickleback" may also refer to the shot of pickle brine itself. Originating in Brooklyn, New York in the early 2000s, the pickleback shot has gained popularity in bars and pubs worldwide.

History[edit | edit source]

The pickleback shot was reportedly first served at the Bushwick Country Club, a bar in Brooklyn, New York, in 2006. The bar's owner, Reggie Cunningham, is credited with popularizing the shot after a customer introduced him to the combination of whiskey and pickle brine.

Preparation and Consumption[edit | edit source]

A pickleback shot is typically served with a shot of whiskey and a shot of pickle brine. The whiskey is drunk first, followed by the pickle brine, which is used to chase the strong taste of the whiskey. The pickle brine can be from any type of pickled cucumber, although dill or bread and butter pickles are commonly used.

Variations[edit | edit source]

There are several variations of the pickleback shot. Some bars and restaurants offer different types of brine for the chaser, such as brine from pickled peppers or pickled onions. In addition, some variations use different types of alcohol in place of the whiskey, such as vodka or tequila.
