Italian doctor known for his work in Uganda



Piero Corti (1925–2003) was an Italian physician renowned for his humanitarian work in Uganda. He dedicated much of his life to improving healthcare in the region, particularly through his efforts at St. Mary's Hospital Lacor.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Piero Corti was born in Besana in Brianza, Italy, in 1925. He pursued his medical education at the University of Milan, where he specialized in pediatrics. His early career was marked by a commitment to improving healthcare systems, which later became the cornerstone of his life's work.

Career and Humanitarian Work[edit | edit source]

In 1961, Piero Corti traveled to Uganda, where he joined forces with Lucille Teasdale, a Canadian surgeon. Together, they transformed a small dispensary into a major hospital, known as St. Mary's Hospital Lacor.

St. Mary's Hospital Lacor, located in Gulu, Uganda, became a beacon of hope for many in the region. Under Corti's leadership, the hospital expanded its facilities and services, providing critical healthcare to thousands of patients annually. Corti's vision was to create a self-sustaining institution that could continue to serve the community long after his departure.

Collaboration with Lucille Teasdale[edit | edit source]

Corti's partnership with Lucille Teasdale was both professional and personal. The two married and had a daughter, Dominique. Their collaboration was instrumental in the hospital's success, with Teasdale focusing on surgical care and Corti on administration and development.
