Pineberry
Pineberry is a white strawberry cultivar with a pineapple-like flavor, white coloring, and red seeds.
History[edit | edit source]
The Pineberry is a hybrid of two species from the Americas. These species are the Fragaria chiloensis, native to Chile, and the Fragaria virginiana, native to North America. The Pineberry was brought back from extinction through the efforts of Dutch farmers. It was introduced into the market in the year 2010.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
The Pineberry is smaller than common strawberries, measuring between 15 to 23 mm. When ripe, it is almost completely white, but with red "seeds" (technically, the correct term is achenes). The plant is disease resistant, but it requires pollination to produce fruit. It is also a non-GMO product.
Taste and Uses[edit | edit source]
The Pineberry offers a sweet, pineapple-like flavor. It is often used in desserts, such as fruit salads, ice cream, and cakes. It can also be used in savory dishes, like salads and salsas.
Nutrition[edit | edit source]
Like other strawberries, the Pineberry is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber. It also contains a small amount of calcium, iron, and protein.
