Plan de Dieu
Plan de Dieu is a wine-producing region located in the southern part of the Rhône Valley in France. It is renowned for its high-quality Côtes du Rhône Villages wines, which are primarily red wines made from a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre grapes.
History[edit | edit source]
The name "Plan de Dieu" translates to "Plain of God" and has historical significance dating back to the Middle Ages. The region was once a forested area that was cleared for agriculture by monks. The fertile soil and favorable climate conditions have made it an ideal location for viticulture.
Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]
Plan de Dieu is situated on a plateau with an elevation ranging from 100 to 120 meters above sea level. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The soil is predominantly composed of clay and limestone, with a significant presence of large, rounded pebbles known as "galets roulés," which help retain heat and ensure optimal ripening of the grapes.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
The vineyards of Plan de Dieu cover approximately 1,200 hectares. The primary grape varieties grown in the region are Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, which are used to produce robust and full-bodied red wines. The wines are known for their rich flavors, with notes of dark fruit, spices, and herbs.
Wine Production[edit | edit source]
The wines of Plan de Dieu are produced under the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation, which is a step above the basic Côtes du Rhône designation. This classification requires stricter regulations regarding grape varieties, yields, and winemaking practices, ensuring higher quality wines. The red wines must contain at least 50% Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvèdre making up the remainder of the blend.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Viticulture is the primary economic activity in Plan de Dieu, with numerous small family-owned wineries and larger cooperatives contributing to the region's wine production. The wines are sold both domestically and internationally, with a growing reputation for quality and value.
Tourism[edit | edit source]
Plan de Dieu attracts wine enthusiasts and tourists who visit the region to explore its vineyards, taste its wines, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Rhône Valley. Wine tours and tastings are popular activities, and the region's proximity to other notable wine regions, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, makes it an attractive destination for wine lovers.
