Planking (fad)
Planking is an activity that involves lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. The palms of the hands are typically touching the sides of the body, and the toes are pointing towards the ground. The participant's straight body is meant to resemble a wooden plank. Originating in the late 2000s, planking became a popular Internet phenomenon, with participants often sharing photographs of their activities on social media platforms.
History[edit | edit source]
The exact origins of planking are disputed, but it is generally agreed that the fad began in the late 2000s. Some reports suggest that it started in Australia, where it was initially known as "the lying down game." The activity gained worldwide popularity in 2011, largely due to its spread through social media and the internet. Participants would often compete to plank in the most unusual or difficult locations, sharing photos of their efforts online.
Rules and Variations[edit | edit source]
The basic rule of planking involves lying face down with the body straight, hands by the sides, and toes pointing down. However, as the fad evolved, participants began introducing variations to the basic pose. These variations included "extreme planking," where individuals would plank in dangerous or hard-to-reach locations, and "owling," where individuals would squat and perch on their toes in an imitation of an owl.
Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]
Planking received mixed reactions from the public and media. While many viewed it as a harmless and humorous activity, others criticized it for being pointless or potentially dangerous, especially when performed in risky locations. Despite this, planking had a significant cultural impact, being featured in news reports, television shows, and even receiving mentions by celebrities and politicians.
Controversies and Safety Concerns[edit | edit source]
The fad was not without its controversies, particularly regarding safety. There were reports of injuries and even fatalities resulting from attempts to plank in hazardous situations. These incidents led to public warnings from law enforcement and safety advocates, urging individuals to exercise caution and avoid putting themselves in danger for the sake of the activity.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Although the popularity of planking has waned since its peak in the early 2010s, it remains an example of how internet phenomena can quickly gain and lose popularity. It also demonstrated the role of social media in spreading and popularizing such activities. Planking paved the way for other internet challenges and fads, highlighting the creative and sometimes risky ways people use the internet to connect and entertain.
