History[edit | edit source]

Planned Parenthood was founded in 1916 by Margaret Sanger, her sister Ethel Byrne, and Fania Mindell, opening the first birth control clinic in the U.S. The organization evolved and expanded over the decades, becoming the Planned Parenthood Federation of America in 1942. Today, it consists of 68 independent local affiliates that operate nearly 600 health centers across the U.S.

Services[edit | edit source]

  • Planned Parenthood provides a wide range of health services, with an emphasis on preventive, primary care. These services include contraception and contraception education, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), cancer screenings, and general women’s health services. They also provide abortions, a service which has been politically controversial.
  • In addition to these physical health services, Planned Parenthood provides comprehensive sex education both in schools and online. They work to ensure that individuals have the information and resources they need to make informed, responsible decisions about their sexual health.

Advocacy[edit | edit source]

Planned Parenthood is not only a provider of healthcare services but also a prominent advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights. The organization works to affect legislation, policies, and public attitudes that support its mission. They advocate for access to sexual health information and affordable healthcare, for the right of individuals to make personal health decisions without political interference, and for access to safe and legal abortion services.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Planned Parenthood's provision of abortion services has made it a focus of political controversy and a target of anti-abortion activists. In recent years, it has faced efforts to defund its services by government officials opposed to abortion. Despite this, Planned Parenthood continues to receive broad public support and maintains its commitment to providing comprehensive reproductive health care.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Planned Parenthood has had a significant impact on reproductive health care in the U.S. and internationally. It has played a crucial role in increasing access to contraception, reducing rates of unintended pregnancy, improving access to abortion services, and advancing women's health and rights.
