Plant tissue
Plant tissue refers to the cellular organizational level intermediate between cells and a complete plant. A tissue is an ensemble of similar cells and their intercellular substance from the same origin that together carry out a specific function. These tissues can be simple, consisting of a single cell type, or complex, consisting of more than one cell type. Above the level of the cell is the tissue system.
Types of Plant Tissues[edit | edit source]
Plant tissues come in several forms: vascular, epidermal, ground, and meristematic. Each type of tissue consists of different types of cells, has different functions, and is located in different places.
Vascular Tissue[edit | edit source]
Vascular tissue is a complex conducting tissue, formed of more than one cell type, found in vascular plants. The primary components of vascular tissue are the xylem and phloem. These two tissues transport fluid and nutrients internally.
Epidermal Tissue[edit | edit source]
Epidermal tissue is a type of tissue that covers the external surface of the plant. It serves as a protective layer that is also involved in the prevention of water loss, regulation of gas exchange, secretion of metabolic compounds, and (especially in roots) absorption of water and minerals.
Ground Tissue[edit | edit source]
Ground tissue is less differentiated than other tissues. It can be involved in photosynthesis (leaves or young stems), storage (roots, tubers, seeds), or support (older stems, old leaves, and floral parts).
Meristematic Tissue[edit | edit source]
Meristematic tissue is the only tissue that can produce new cells through cell division. It is responsible for the growth and development of new organs.
