Plasticizers

Plasticizers are additives that increase the plasticity or decrease the viscosity of a material. These are the substances which are added in order to alter their physical properties. These are either liquids with low volatility or solids. They are usually organic esters, which are compounds formed by replacing the hydrogen of an acid by an alkyl or other organic group. Many plasticizers are esters of phthalic acid.

Types of Plasticizers

Plasticizers can be categorized into two types based on their compatibility with the material to be plasticized.

• Primary Plasticizers: They are compatible with the material to be plasticized and are used in high percentages. Examples include Dibutyl phthalate and Dioctyl phthalate.
• Secondary Plasticizers: They are partially compatible with the material to be plasticized and are used in combination with primary plasticizers. Examples include Chlorinated paraffin and Epoxidized soybean oil.

Applications

Plasticizers are widely used in various industries due to their ability to improve the flexibility and workability of the materials. Some of the major applications of plasticizers include:

• PVC Compounds: Plasticizers are used in PVC compounds to improve their flexibility and durability.
• Rubber Manufacturing: They are used in the manufacturing of rubber to improve its elasticity and flexibility.
• Adhesives and Sealants: Plasticizers are used in adhesives and sealants to improve their flexibility and adhesion properties.
• Paints and Coatings: They are used in paints and coatings to improve their flow and leveling properties.

Health and Environmental Concerns

There are several health and environmental concerns associated with the use of plasticizers. Some plasticizers, such as phthalates, have been linked to health issues including endocrine disruption and obesity. Moreover, plasticizers can leach out of products into the environment, causing pollution.
