Pomeranian Voivodeship

Pomeranian Voivodeship (Polish: Województwo pomorskie) is one of the 16 voivodeships (provinces) in Poland. It is located in the northern part of the country, on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. The capital and largest city of the voivodeship is Gdańsk.

The Pomeranian Voivodeship was established on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. The territory of the voivodeship was previously part of the voivodeships of Gdańsk, Elbląg and Słupsk.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Pomeranian Voivodeship covers an area of approximately 18,310 square kilometers. It borders the West Pomeranian Voivodeship to the west, the Greater Poland Voivodeship and the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship to the south, and the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship to the east. To the north, it is bordered by the Baltic Sea.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of the Pomeranian Voivodeship is diverse and well-developed. It is one of the wealthiest regions in Poland, with a high GDP per capita. The main sectors of the economy are services, industry, and agriculture. The region is also a major tourist destination, thanks to its beautiful coastline, historic cities, and natural attractions.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The Pomeranian Voivodeship is rich in cultural heritage. It is home to many historic sites, including the medieval Gdańsk Old Town and the Malbork Castle, the largest castle in the world by land area. The region also hosts numerous cultural events and festivals, such as the Gdańsk Shakespeare Festival and the Sopot International Song Festival.
