Pontevedra is a city and municipality in the north-west of Spain, in the autonomous community of Galicia. It is the capital of the province of Pontevedra and is known for its well-preserved old town and vibrant cultural life.

History[edit | edit source]

Pontevedra has a rich history dating back to Roman times. The city was an important trading hub during the Middle Ages, benefiting from its strategic location on the Ría de Pontevedra. The city's name is derived from the Latin "Pontis Veteris," meaning "old bridge," referring to the Roman bridge that once spanned the Lérez River.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, Pontevedra experienced significant growth and prosperity, becoming one of the most important ports in Galicia. However, the city faced decline in the 17th century due to silting of the river and competition from other ports.
