Portland Mercado
Portland Mercado is a public market located in Portland, Oregon, United States, that serves as a hub for Latin American culture and entrepreneurship. Opened in April 2015, the Mercado aims to provide a vibrant space for the community to gather, shop, eat, and celebrate the diverse culinary traditions of Latin America. It is the first of its kind in Portland, offering a unique blend of multicultural experiences through its array of businesses, including food carts, a coffee shop, a bar, a bakery, and various retail outlets.
History[edit | edit source]
The concept of Portland Mercado was developed by the nonprofit organization Hacienda CDC, a Community Development Corporation focused on housing, economic development, and family services for Latinx communities in Oregon. The project was envisioned as a means to support Latinx entrepreneurs by providing affordable retail spaces, thereby fostering economic development and cultural exchange. After several years of planning and development, with support from the City of Portland and various community partners, the Mercado officially opened its doors to the public.
Facilities and Services[edit | edit source]
Portland Mercado hosts a diverse range of businesses, all of which are owned and operated by Latinx entrepreneurs. The facilities include:
- Food Carts: Offering a wide variety of authentic Latin American cuisines, from Mexican tacos and Salvadoran pupusas to Colombian arepas and Peruvian ceviche.

- Café: A coffee shop offering traditional Latin American coffee and pastries.
- Bakery: Providing a selection of Latin American breads and sweets.

Impact[edit | edit source]
Portland Mercado has had a significant impact on the local community since its inception. It has become a cornerstone for Latinx entrepreneurs in Portland, offering a supportive and affordable platform to start and grow their businesses. The Mercado has also served as a cultural bridge, introducing the wider Portland community to the diverse cultures and cuisines of Latin America. Its success has sparked interest in similar projects in other cities, highlighting the potential for multicultural markets to drive economic development and cultural exchange.
Challenges[edit | edit source]
Despite its success, Portland Mercado has faced challenges, including navigating the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on small businesses and addressing the needs of a growing number of entrepreneurs seeking space and resources. The Mercado continues to adapt and evolve, seeking ways to support its vendors and the broader community amidst changing economic and social landscapes.
