Potters For Peace
Potters for Peace is a non-profit, social justice organization dedicated to assisting potters in developing countries and promoting the use of ceramic water filters to improve drinking water quality. Founded in the late 1970s in response to the Nicaraguan Revolution, Potters for Peace has expanded its mission to include both a Ceramic Water Filter project and support for pottery communities around the world, particularly in Central America.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of Potters for Peace can be traced back to the late 1970s, when a group of North American potters and activists, moved by the plight and resilience of Nicaraguan potters in the aftermath of the Nicaraguan Revolution, decided to offer their skills and knowledge to help rebuild the local pottery industry. This initial effort focused on technical assistance, workshops, and the exchange of cultural and artistic ideas. Over time, the organization's activities have grown to include the promotion of ceramic water filters as a means to provide access to safe drinking water, a critical issue in many developing countries.
Ceramic Water Filter Project[edit | edit source]
One of the key initiatives of Potters for Peace is the Ceramic Water Filter Project. This project involves the production and distribution of low-cost ceramic water filters, which are capable of removing approximately 99.9% of water-borne pathogens, thereby significantly improving the quality of drinking water. The filters are made using locally sourced materials and traditional pottery techniques, making them an accessible and sustainable solution for communities in need.
Support for Pottery Communities[edit | edit source]
In addition to the Ceramic Water Filter Project, Potters for Peace works to support pottery communities by providing technical assistance, facilitating access to markets, and promoting cultural exchange. The organization helps potters improve their production techniques, design new products, and find new markets for their work. By doing so, Potters for Peace aims to help preserve traditional pottery techniques while also improving the economic well-being of artisan communities.
Impact[edit | edit source]
The impact of Potters for Peace's work is felt in several areas. The Ceramic Water Filter Project has been instrumental in providing access to safe drinking water for thousands of families in over 30 countries, thereby reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases. The support for pottery communities has helped to preserve cultural heritage and improve the livelihoods of artisans. Furthermore, the organization's emphasis on sustainability and local empowerment serves as a model for other development projects.
