Praise sandwich
Praise Sandwich is a feedback technique commonly used in management, psychology, and education to deliver constructive criticism to an individual in a manner that is perceived as less negative and more encouraging. The method involves "sandwiching" the constructive criticism between two positive comments, hence the name "Praise Sandwich". This approach is based on the belief that starting and ending the feedback session on a positive note can make the recipient more receptive to the criticism, thereby facilitating a more productive response to the feedback.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The Praise Sandwich technique is structured in three parts:
- Positive Start: The feedback session begins with praise or positive recognition of the individual's strengths or achievements. This sets a positive tone and helps the recipient to be more open to the subsequent criticism.
- Constructive Criticism: Following the initial praise, the feedback provider delivers the constructive criticism. This is the core of the feedback, aimed at addressing areas where improvement is needed. It is important that this criticism is specific, focused, and related to behaviors or outcomes that can be changed or improved.
- Positive End: The session concludes with additional praise or positive comments. This final positive note is intended to motivate the individual, reinforcing their value and the belief that they can improve.
Application[edit | edit source]
The Praise Sandwich method is used in various settings, including corporate environments, educational institutions, and personal relationships. Managers and educators often use it as a tool to provide feedback in a way that maintains the recipient's self-esteem and motivation. However, the effectiveness of the Praise Sandwich can vary depending on factors such as the sincerity of the praise, the relevance and specificity of the criticism, and the individual's openness to feedback.
Criticism[edit | edit source]
While the Praise Sandwich is popular for its positive approach to feedback, it has faced criticism. Some argue that it can lead to confusion about the seriousness of the constructive criticism if the recipient focuses only on the positive comments. Others believe that it can come across as insincere or formulaic, particularly if used excessively or inappropriately. Effective use of the Praise Sandwich requires careful balance and genuine communication.
