Prak_ti in S__khya Philosophy[edit | edit source]

Prak_ti is a fundamental concept in S__khya philosophy, one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy. It refers to the natural or material world, the primal matter that is the source of the physical universe. Prak_ti is considered to be the unmanifested, primordial substance that evolves into the manifest world.

Nature of Prak_ti[edit | edit source]

Prak_ti is described as being composed of three gu_as or qualities: sattva, rajas, and tamas. These gu_as are in a state of equilibrium in the unmanifested Prak_ti. When this equilibrium is disturbed, the process of evolution begins, leading to the creation of the universe.

  • Sattva is the quality of balance, harmony, and light.
  • Rajas is the quality of activity, change, and passion.
  • Tamas is the quality of inertia, darkness, and stability.

Evolution of Prak_ti[edit | edit source]

The evolution of Prak_ti is a central theme in S__khya philosophy. It is believed that from Prak_ti, the entire cosmos evolves through a series of transformations. The first product of Prak_ti is mahat or the great principle, which is associated with intelligence or cosmic consciousness.

Following mahat, the evolution continues with the emergence of aha_k_ra, the principle of individuation or ego. Aha_k_ra further differentiates into the mind (manas), the five sense organs (jñ_nendriyas), the five motor organs (karmendriyas), and the five subtle elements (tanm_tras).

The tanm_tras evolve into the five gross elements (mah_bh_tas):

Prak_ti and Puru_a[edit | edit source]

In S__khya philosophy, Prak_ti is always contrasted with Puru_a, the pure consciousness or spirit. While Prak_ti is the material cause of the universe, Puru_a is the conscious observer. The interaction between Prak_ti and Puru_a is what gives rise to the experience of the world.
