The presidency of Herbert Hoover began on March 4, 1929, when Herbert Hoover was inaugurated as the 31st president of the United States, and ended on March 4, 1933. Hoover, a member of the Republican Party, took office after a landslide victory in the 1928 United States presidential election. His presidency is often remembered for the onset of the Great Depression.

Domestic Policy[edit | edit source]

Economic Policies[edit | edit source]

Hoover's presidency was marked by the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression. Hoover believed in volunteerism and limited government intervention in the economy. He established the President's Emergency Committee for Employment and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to provide loans to banks, railroads, and other businesses.

Public Works[edit | edit source]

Hoover supported public works projects to stimulate the economy. The most notable project was the construction of the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, which provided jobs and hydroelectric power.

Agricultural Policies[edit | edit source]

Hoover signed the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1929, which aimed to stabilize farm prices through the creation of the Federal Farm Board. However, the act was largely ineffective in addressing the agricultural crisis.

Foreign Policy[edit | edit source]

Latin America[edit | edit source]

Hoover sought to improve relations with Latin America through the Good Neighbor Policy, which aimed to reduce U.S. military interventions in the region.

Disarmament[edit | edit source]

Hoover was a proponent of international disarmament and participated in the London Naval Conference (1930), which sought to limit naval armaments among the major powers.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Hoover's presidency is often criticized for his handling of the Great Depression. Despite his efforts to combat the economic downturn, his policies were seen as too little, too late. He was defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1932 United States presidential election, leading to the implementation of the New Deal.
