Prostatic fluid

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Prostatic fluid is a component of semen that is secreted by the prostate gland. It plays a crucial role in male reproduction and sexual health.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Prostatic fluid is composed of a variety of substances, including enzymes, zinc, and citric acid. These substances contribute to the overall function and health of the sperm during ejaculation.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of prostatic fluid is to nourish and protect sperm. The enzymes present in the fluid help to break down the cervical mucus, allowing the sperm to move more freely. The zinc in the fluid helps to stabilize the DNA of the sperm, while the citric acid provides energy for the sperm.

Health Implications[edit | edit source]

Abnormalities in the prostatic fluid can lead to a variety of health issues, including prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and prostate cancer. These conditions can cause symptoms such as difficulty urinating, pain in the pelvic area, and sexual dysfunction.
