Pruning shears
Pruning shears, also known as hand pruners (in American English), or secateurs (in British English), are a type of scissors for use on plants. They are strong enough to prune hard branches of trees and shrubs, sometimes up to two centimeters thick. Pruning shears are used in gardening, arboriculture, farming, flower arranging, and nature conservation, where fine-scale habitat management is required.
Types of Pruning Shears[edit | edit source]
Pruning shears come in two basic forms: bypass and anvil.
Bypass Pruning Shears[edit | edit source]
Bypass pruning shears consist of a sharp blade that slides past a broad, flat blade, similar to how a pair of scissors works. This design is preferred for precise cutting of green, living growth, as it provides a clean cut without crushing the plant tissue.
Anvil Pruning Shears[edit | edit source]
Anvil pruning shears feature a single straight cutting blade that closes against a flat surface, resembling an anvil. This type is more suited for dead wood and can cause more damage to fresh, green branches and stems due to the crushing action.
Usage[edit | edit source]
Pruning shears are used to control the growth of plants, remove deadwood, shape plants, and ensure healthy plant growth. The clean cuts made by pruning shears can help prevent diseases from entering the plant. Regular maintenance of the shears, including cleaning and sharpening, is necessary to keep them in good condition and ensure the health of the plants being pruned.
Maintenance[edit | edit source]
To maintain pruning shears, it is important to clean them after each use to remove sap and debris. Sharpening the blades regularly ensures clean cuts, and oiling the moving parts prevents rust and keeps the mechanism smooth. Some models allow for the replacement of blades, springs, and other parts, extending the life of the shears.
Safety[edit | edit source]
When using pruning shears, safety is paramount. Users should always wear appropriate protective clothing, including gloves, to protect the hands from sharp blades and rough plant material. Care should be taken to cut away from the body, and the shears should be locked closed when not in use to prevent accidents.
Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]
Proper use of pruning shears has a positive impact on the environment by helping to maintain healthy plants and trees, which can contribute to the overall health of ecosystems. Pruning can help control invasive species, promote native vegetation, and support wildlife habitat conservation.
