Prunus salicina, commonly known as the Japanese plum or Chinese plum, is a species of Prunus native to China. It is now also grown in fruit orchards worldwide, especially in the United States, Europe, and Australia, due to its sweet, juicy fruit.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Prunus salicina tree grows to a height of 10–15 m and has a trunk diameter of up to 40 cm. The leaves are 6–12 cm long and 2.5–5 cm broad, with a serrated margin. The flowers are white with five petals and about 2 cm in diameter. The fruit is a drupe 4–7 cm in diameter and yellow or red in color.

Cultivation and uses[edit | edit source]

Prunus salicina is widely cultivated for its fruit in temperate areas worldwide. The fruit is sweet with a hint of tartness and a rich, juicy texture. It is eaten fresh and is also used in the production of jam, jelly, and plum wine. In addition, the wood of the tree is used for making furniture and other wooden items.

There are several varieties of Prunus salicina, including 'Santa Rosa', 'Satsuma', 'Burbank', 'Mariposa', and 'Friar'. These varieties differ in terms of fruit size, color, and flavor.
