Prunus transarisanensis[edit | edit source]

Prunus transarisanensis is a species of Prunus in the family Rosaceae. It is endemic to Taiwan, where it is known as the "Taiwan cherry". This species is a deciduous tree that grows to a height of 15-20 meters.

Description[edit | edit source]

Prunus transarisanensis is a deciduous tree with a broad crown. The bark is dark brown and slightly fissured. The leaves are alternate, simple, ovate to elliptic, and have a serrated margin. The flowers are pink, borne in clusters, and bloom in early spring. The fruit is a small, red drupe.

Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]

Prunus transarisanensis is endemic to Taiwan. It is found in the central and southern parts of the island, at altitudes of 1,300-2,600 meters. The species prefers sunny, well-drained sites and is often found in mixed forests.

Cultivation and Uses[edit | edit source]

Prunus transarisanensis is cultivated as an ornamental tree for its attractive flowers and autumn foliage. It is also used in traditional medicine in Taiwan. The wood is hard and durable, and is used for making furniture and tools.

Conservation Status[edit | edit source]

Prunus transarisanensis is not currently listed as threatened or endangered. However, like many endemic species, it may be vulnerable to habitat loss and climate change.
