The Purdue Boilermakers are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Boilermakers compete in the NCAA Division I and are members of the Big Ten Conference. The nickname "Boilermakers" is derived from the university's engineering heritage and the early football team's reputation for physically tough play.

The term "Boilermakers" was first used in the 1890s when the Purdue football team defeated Wabash College, and a local newspaper referred to the team as "Boilermakers" due to the large number of engineering students on the team. The name stuck and has been used ever since.
