Quadrangular Space[edit | edit source]

The quadrangular space is a region located in the posterior aspect of the shoulder joint. It is an anatomical space formed by the borders of various muscles and tendons. This article will provide an overview of the quadrangular space, its boundaries, and its clinical significance.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The quadrangular space is bounded by four structures:

1. Superiorly, it is bordered by the teres minor muscle. 2. Inferiorly, it is bordered by the teres major muscle. 3. Medially, it is bordered by the long head of the triceps brachii muscle. 4. Laterally, it is bordered by the surgical neck of the humerus.

Within the quadrangular space, several important structures pass through or are located nearby. These include:

1. Axillary nerve: This nerve passes through the quadrangular space and innervates the deltoid muscle and the skin over the shoulder joint. 2. Posterior circumflex humeral artery: This artery also passes through the quadrangular space and supplies blood to the shoulder joint and surrounding muscles. 3. Veins and lymphatics: Various veins and lymphatic vessels traverse the quadrangular space.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

The quadrangular space has clinical significance due to its involvement in certain pathological conditions. Some of these include:

1. Quadrilateral space syndrome: This condition occurs when there is compression or entrapment of the axillary nerve within the quadrangular space. It can result in shoulder pain, weakness, and sensory disturbances in the affected area. 2. Vascular injuries: In rare cases, trauma to the quadrangular space can lead to damage to the posterior circumflex humeral artery, resulting in bleeding and potential complications.
