Quadrosilan

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Quadrosilan is a type of chemical compound that belongs to the class of organosilicon compounds. It is a tetrahedral molecule with the chemical formula Si4H10. Quadrosilan is a derivative of silane, which is the simplest silane with the formula SiH4.

Structure and Bonding[edit | edit source]

Quadrosilan has a tetrahedral structure, similar to that of methane in organic chemistry. Each silicon atom in the molecule is bonded to one hydrogen atom and three other silicon atoms. The Si-Si bond length in quadrosilan is approximately 2.34 Å, which is slightly longer than the Si-Si bond length in disilane (Si2H6).

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

Quadrosilan can be synthesized by the reaction of dichlorosilane with lithium aluminium hydride in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction proceeds via the formation of a silyl anion, which then reacts with another molecule of dichlorosilane to form quadrosilan.

Properties[edit | edit source]

Quadrosilan is a colorless, volatile liquid at room temperature. It is less dense than water and is insoluble in water. However, it is soluble in organic solvents such as toluene and tetrahydrofuran. Quadrosilan is also highly reactive, particularly towards oxygen and halogens.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Due to its reactivity, quadrosilan is primarily used in the synthesis of other organosilicon compounds. It can also be used as a reducing agent in certain chemical reactions. In addition, quadrosilan has potential applications in the field of semiconductor technology, where it can be used in the deposition of silicon-containing films.

Safety[edit | edit source]

Like many organosilicon compounds, quadrosilan is flammable and should be handled with care. It can react violently with oxidizing agents and halogens, and it can also decompose to form toxic gases such as silicon tetrahydride.
