Quercus durata is a species of oak in the Fagaceae family. It is commonly known as the leather oak. This species is native to California, particularly in the California chaparral and woodlands ecoregion.

Description[edit | edit source]

Quercus durata is an evergreen shrub or small tree that typically grows to a height of 1 to 4 meters. The leaves are thick, leathery, and have a dark green upper surface with a paler, fuzzy underside. The edges of the leaves are often rolled under, giving them a distinctive appearance. The plant produces acorns that are 1 to 2 centimeters long, which mature in about 18 months.

Habitat[edit | edit source]

This species is adapted to grow in serpentine soils, which are characterized by high levels of heavy metals and low levels of essential nutrients. Quercus durata is often found in chaparral and woodland habitats, where it plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by providing food and shelter for various wildlife species.

Distribution[edit | edit source]

Quercus durata is endemic to California, with its range primarily concentrated in the Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada foothills. It is particularly abundant in areas with serpentine soils, which are inhospitable to many other plant species.

Ecology[edit | edit source]

The leather oak is an important component of the chaparral ecosystem. Its thick, leathery leaves are adapted to withstand the hot, dry conditions typical of this habitat. The plant is also fire-adapted, meaning it can resprout from its root crown after being burned. This adaptation is crucial for survival in fire-prone areas.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Quercus durata is not currently listed as a threatened or endangered species. However, its habitat is subject to pressures from urban development, mining, and other human activities. Conservation efforts are focused on preserving the unique serpentine habitats where this species thrives.

Uses[edit | edit source]

While Quercus durata is not widely used in horticulture, it is sometimes planted in native plant gardens and restoration projects due to its adaptability to poor soils and its role in supporting local wildlife.
