Rémy Martin
Rémy Martin is a French cognac house founded in 1724 by the winegrower, Rémy Martin. The brand specializes in the production of Cognac, a type of brandy that is among the most prestigious in the world. Rémy Martin is known for producing only Cognac Fine Champagne, which is a cognac blended from eaux-de-vie from the Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne crus, with at least 50% Grande Champagne.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of Rémy Martin dates back to 1724 when the company was founded in the Cognac region of France by Rémy Martin, a farmer who turned to cognac production. The brand gained recognition for its quality and craftsmanship, and in 1738, King Louis XV of France granted Rémy Martin a rare warrant to plant new vines in recognition of the excellence of his cognacs.
Over the centuries, Rémy Martin expanded its operations and solidified its reputation as a producer of high-quality cognac. In 1927, the company adopted the Centaur logo, inspired by the zodiac sign of the founder, Rémy Martin, who was a Sagittarius, symbolizing the union of man and nature.
Production[edit | edit source]
Rémy Martin cognac is produced using specific grape varieties, primarily Ugni Blanc, known for its high acidity and low alcohol content, ideal for distillation. The cognac is distilled twice in copper pot stills and aged in French oak barrels from the Limousin or Tronçais forests. The aging process is crucial for developing the cognac's complex flavors and aromas.
The house of Rémy Martin is one of the few to produce only Cognac Fine Champagne. This designation requires that the eaux-de-vie be sourced exclusively from the Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne areas, known for their chalky soil, which imparts a greater complexity and longevity to the cognac.
Products[edit | edit source]
Rémy Martin offers a range of cognacs, from the VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) to the prestigious Louis XIII. The VSOP is matured for at least four years and is known for its smooth, velvety texture and aromatic richness. The Louis XIII, on the other hand, is a blend of 1,200 eaux-de-vie aged up to 100 years in century-old tierçon barrels, representing the pinnacle of the brand's craftsmanship.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Rémy Martin has contributed significantly to the global recognition of cognac as a symbol of French luxury and craftsmanship. The brand's commitment to quality, tradition, and innovation continues to be celebrated by cognac connoisseurs worldwide.
