R. A. MacAvoy, born Roberta Ann MacAvoy, is an American author known for her works in the fantasy and science fiction genres. She was born on December 13, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio. MacAvoy developed an interest in literature and storytelling at a young age, which later influenced her career as a writer.

MacAvoy began her writing career in the early 1980s. Her debut novel, Tea with the Black Dragon, was published in 1983 and received critical acclaim. The novel was nominated for the Nebula Award and the Hugo Award, and it won the Locus Award for Best First Novel. This success established MacAvoy as a prominent voice in speculative fiction.
Following her debut, MacAvoy continued to write both standalone novels and series. Her notable works include the Damiano trilogy, consisting of Damiano (1984), Damiano's Lute (1984), and Raphael (1984). These novels blend elements of fantasy and historical fiction, set in an alternate version of Renaissance Italy.
