RTÉ
RTÉ (Raidió Teilifís Éireann) is the national public service broadcaster of Ireland. It both produces programs and broadcasts them on television, radio and the Internet. The radio service began on 1 January 1926, while regular television broadcasts began on 31 December 1961, making it one of the oldest continuously operating public service broadcasters in the world.
History[edit | edit source]
RTÉ traces its roots back to the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1926 and the establishment of 2RN, the first radio station in Ireland, on 1 January 1926. The Television Act, 1960 led to the establishment of Telefís Éireann, which began broadcasting on 31 December 1961. The broadcaster was rebranded as Radio Telefís Éireann (RTÉ) in 1966, at the same time that RTÉ 2 (now RTÉ Two) was launched.
Services[edit | edit source]
RTÉ provides a comprehensive range of television, radio and online services which are broadcast in Ireland and internationally. These include:
- RTÉ One and RTÉ2: The main television channels in Ireland.
- RTÉ News: Provides comprehensive news and current affairs programming.
- RTÉ Radio: Operates four national radio stations, RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2fm, RTÉ lyric fm and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.
- RTÉ Player: The broadcaster's online catch-up service.

RTÉ is a statutory body, overseen by a board appointed by the Government of Ireland. Its activities are funded by a combination of television licence fees and commercial advertising.
