Raboso is a variety of grape used for red wine, native to the Veneto region of Italy. It is grown mainly in the Piave river area and is the principal grape of the Raboso Piave DOC.
History[edit | edit source]
Raboso is an ancient grape variety, known to have been grown in the Veneto region since at least the Roman times. It was mentioned in writings by Pliny the Elder and Columella, two of the most important naturalists of the Roman era.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Raboso is a late-ripening grape, usually harvested in late October or early November. It is known for its high acidity and tannin content, which makes it suitable for long aging. The wines made from Raboso are typically deep in color, with a robust structure and complex aromas of dark fruit, earth, and spice.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Raboso is primarily grown in the Piave river area in the Veneto region of Italy. It is a hardy grape, resistant to many diseases and pests, including phylloxera. However, it is a difficult grape to cultivate due to its late ripening and high acidity.
Wine Styles[edit | edit source]
Raboso is used to produce a variety of wine styles, from still red wines to sparkling and dessert wines. The most famous wine made from Raboso is Raboso Piave, a DOC wine from the Piave river area. Other notable wines include Raboso Veronese and Raboso del Piave.
