Order: Hygrophila
Family: Lymnaeidae

Radix peregra, commonly known as the wandering snail, is a species of small freshwater gastropod in the family Lymnaeidae. This species is widely distributed across Europe and is known for its adaptability to various freshwater habitats.

Description[edit | edit source]

Radix peregra is characterized by its thin, translucent shell, which is typically light brown to yellowish in color. The shell is dextral and has a high spire with a large body whorl. The aperture is large and oval, and the shell surface is smooth with fine growth lines. Adult shells can reach up to 15 mm in height.

Distribution[edit | edit source]

This species is found throughout Europe, from the British Isles to Eastern Europe, and is also present in parts of Asia. Radix peregra inhabits a variety of freshwater environments, including ponds, lakes, rivers, and marshes. It is tolerant of a wide range of environmental conditions, including variations in temperature, pH, and salinity.

Ecology[edit | edit source]

Radix peregra plays a significant role in freshwater ecosystems. It is a primary consumer, feeding on algae, detritus, and plant material. This species is also an important food source for various predators, including fish and birds.

The snail is a hermaphrodite, possessing both male and female reproductive organs. It can reproduce both sexually and asexually, which contributes to its wide distribution and adaptability.

Medical Importance[edit | edit source]

Radix peregra is of interest in medical research due to its role as an intermediate host for certain parasitic trematodes, including those that cause diseases in humans and livestock. Understanding the biology and ecology of R. peregra can aid in controlling the spread of these parasites.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

While Radix peregra is not currently considered threatened, its populations can be affected by pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining clean and healthy freshwater habitats to support diverse mollusk communities.
