Rand Paul
American politician and physician
Rand Paul (born January 7, 1963) is an American politician and physician serving as the junior United States Senator from Kentucky since 2011. He is a member of the Republican Party. Paul is the son of former U.S. Representative Ron Paul of Texas.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Rand Paul was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Carol (née Wells) and Ron Paul. He was raised in Lake Jackson, Texas, where his father practiced medicine and was elected to the United States House of Representatives. Paul attended Baylor University and later graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1988 with a M.D. degree.
Medical career[edit | edit source]
After completing his medical training, Paul began practicing ophthalmology in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He founded his own clinic, the "Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic," which provides free eye exams and surgeries to those in need. Paul is board-certified by the National Board of Ophthalmology, an organization he founded after a dispute with the American Board of Ophthalmology.

U.S. Senate[edit | edit source]
Rand Paul announced his candidacy for the United States Senate in 2009, running as a Republican. He won the Republican primary and subsequently the general election in 2010. Paul was re-elected in 2016 and 2022. As a senator, he has been known for his libertarian-leaning views and advocacy for limited government, individual liberties, and a non-interventionist foreign policy.

Paul has been involved in various legislative efforts, including advocating for a balanced budget amendment, opposing the USA PATRIOT Act, and supporting criminal justice reform. He has also been a vocal critic of government surveillance programs and has worked to reform the Federal Reserve System.
