Rangers F.C.

Rangers Football Club, commonly referred to as Rangers, is a professional football club based in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in March 1872, Rangers is one of the oldest football clubs in the world and has a rich history of success both domestically and in European competitions.

History[edit | edit source]

Rangers F.C. was founded by four young men, Moses McNeil, Peter McNeil, Peter Campbell, and William McBeath, who shared a passion for football. The club played its first match in May 1872, a friendly against Callander F.C. at Flesher's Haugh in Glasgow Green.

Early Success[edit | edit source]

Rangers quickly established themselves as a dominant force in Scottish football. They won their first Scottish Cup in 1894 and their first Scottish League title in 1891. The club's early success laid the foundation for a long-standing rivalry with Celtic F.C., known as the Old Firm derby.

The Ibrox Disaster[edit | edit source]

One of the most tragic events in the club's history occurred on January 2, 1971, when a crush on Stairway 13 at Ibrox Stadium resulted in the deaths of 66 supporters. This disaster led to significant changes in stadium safety regulations.

Recent History[edit | edit source]

In 2012, Rangers faced financial difficulties and entered administration. The club was subsequently liquidated and reformed, starting in the third tier of Scottish football. Rangers returned to the Scottish Premiership in 2016 and won their 55th league title in the 2020-2021 season.

Stadium[edit | edit source]

Rangers play their home matches at Ibrox Stadium, located in the Ibrox area of Glasgow. The stadium has a seating capacity of over 50,000 and is known for its iconic red-brick facade and passionate atmosphere.

Supporters[edit | edit source]

Rangers have a large and dedicated fan base, with supporters clubs located around the world. The club's fans are known for their loyalty and the famous anthem "Follow Follow."

Honours[edit | edit source]

Rangers have won more league titles and trebles than any other club in the world. Their honours include:

  • 55 Scottish League titles
  • 33 Scottish Cups
  • 27 Scottish League Cups
  • 1 European Cup Winners' Cup (1972)

Rivalries[edit | edit source]

Rangers' most intense rivalry is with Celtic F.C., with whom they contest the Old Firm derby. This rivalry is deeply rooted in Scottish culture and history, often reflecting religious and political divisions.
