Rawson-Neal Hospital

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital is a mental hospital located in Las Vegas, Nevada. It opened as a 190-bed facility on August 28, 2006. The hospital is operated by the state of Nevada.

Controversy arose in April 2013 when it was reported that the hospital was illegally busing newly discharged psychiatric patients to California and other states. The Sacramento Bee conducted an investigative series that revealed the practice of "patient dumping.

" Patients, some still mentally ill and indigent, were given one-way Greyhound bus tickets to out-of-state destinations without proper provisions for food, medication, housing, or medical treatment. This practice became known as "Greyhound therapy.

" The report found that a third of the patients were sent to California, with many arriving in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Further investigation revealed that patients had been bused as far away as New York City, Chicago, Miami, and Boston.

The controversy led to an investigation by San Francisco's City Attorney, Dennis Herrera. The hospital was criticized for discharging patients before they had fully recovered, as long as they agreed to go to another state. Patients were encouraged to reach out to family members in other states to expedite their discharge.

The revelations sparked public outrage and raised concerns about the treatment and care of psychiatric patients at Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital. The incident highlighted the need for stricter regulations and oversight in the mental healthcare system.
