Ray-Ban

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Ray-Ban is an American-founded Italian brand of luxury sunglasses and eyeglasses created in 1936 by the American company Bausch & Lomb. The brand is known for their Wayfarer and Aviator lines of sunglasses. In 1999, Bausch & Lomb sold the brand to the Italian eyewear conglomerate, Luxottica Group, for a reported $640 million.

History[edit | edit source]

Ray-Ban was founded in 1936 by Bausch & Lomb, a medical equipment manufacturer based in Rochester, New York. The brand was created in response to a request from the United States Army Air Corps for a pair of sunglasses that would protect pilots from the harmful effects of the high-altitude sun, while also being stylish and comfortable to wear.

The result was the Ray-Ban Aviator, which featured a unique teardrop shape and green lenses that could filter out blue light. The sunglasses were an immediate success, and were quickly adopted by the military for use in World War II.

In the 1950s, Ray-Ban introduced the Wayfarer, a pair of sunglasses with a distinctive trapezoidal frame. The Wayfarer became popular among celebrities and musicians, and is often associated with the "cool" image of the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1999, Bausch & Lomb sold Ray-Ban to the Italian eyewear conglomerate, Luxottica Group, for a reported $640 million. Since then, Ray-Ban has continued to innovate and expand its product line, while maintaining its classic styles and high-quality craftsmanship.

Products[edit | edit source]

Ray-Ban's product line includes a wide range of sunglasses and eyeglasses, with various styles and designs. The brand's most popular products are the Aviator and Wayfarer sunglasses, which have become iconic in the fashion industry.

The Aviator sunglasses feature a teardrop-shaped lens and a thin metal frame, while the Wayfarer sunglasses have a trapezoidal frame and thick plastic rims. Both styles are available in a variety of colors and lens options, including polarized and non-polarized lenses.

In addition to sunglasses, Ray-Ban also offers a range of eyeglasses for both men and women. These glasses feature the same high-quality materials and craftsmanship as the brand's sunglasses, and are available in a variety of styles and designs.
