History[edit | edit source]

The Reading Eagle was first published on January 28, 1868. It was founded by Jesse Hawley, a local businessman who saw the need for a daily newspaper in Reading. The newspaper has been in continuous publication since its founding, making it one of the oldest newspapers in Pennsylvania.

In 1940, the Reading Eagle Company purchased its evening competitor, the Reading Times, and merged the two newspapers into the Reading Eagle-Times, which was published in the afternoon. The morning edition continued to be published as the Reading Eagle.

In 2009, the Reading Eagle Company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing declining advertising revenue and circulation. The company was purchased by MediaNews Group in 2019.
