Reddit is a social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site such as links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down by other members. Posts are organized by subject into user-created boards called "subreddits", which cover a variety of topics including news, science, movies, video games, music, books, fitness, food, and image-sharing. Submissions with more up-votes appear towards the top of their subreddit and, if they receive enough up-votes, ultimately on the site's front page.
History[edit | edit source]
Reddit was founded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in June 2005. The site was acquired by Condé Nast Publications in October 2006. In 2011, Reddit became an independent subsidiary of Advance Publications, Condé Nast's parent company. Reddit has since grown to become one of the most visited websites in the world.
Features[edit | edit source]
Reddit is a collection of entries submitted by its registered users, essentially a bulletin board system. The site's content is divided into numerous categories, and the most popular posts from these "subreddits" are visible on the front page to those who browse the site without an account.
Subreddits[edit | edit source]
Subreddits are user-created areas of interest where discussions on Reddit are organized. Each subreddit has its own rules and guidelines, which are enforced by moderators. Popular subreddits include r/news, r/funny, r/AskReddit, and r/todayilearned.
Voting and Karma[edit | edit source]
Users can upvote or downvote posts and comments, which affects the visibility of the content. The total score of a user's contributions is called "karma". Karma is divided into post karma and comment karma, which reflect the user's contributions to the site.
Reddit Gold and Premium[edit | edit source]
Reddit offers a premium membership called Reddit Premium (formerly Reddit Gold), which provides users with an ad-free experience, access to a private subreddit, and other features.
Community and Culture[edit | edit source]
Reddit is known for its diverse and active community. The site hosts Ask Me Anything (AMA) sessions, where notable individuals answer questions from the community. Reddit has also been involved in various charitable activities and social movements.
Controversies[edit | edit source]
Reddit has faced several controversies, including issues related to free speech, privacy, and content moderation. The site has implemented various measures to address these concerns, including updating its content policy and increasing transparency.
