Refošk

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Refošk is a red wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Istria region of Croatia, and in the Slovenian part of Istria, where it is known as Refošk. It is also cultivated in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy, where it is known as Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Refošk are believed to be in the Istria region, which spans across modern-day Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. The grape variety has been cultivated in this region for centuries, and it is mentioned in historical documents dating back to the Roman times.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Refošk is a late-ripening grape variety that requires a warm climate to fully mature. It is resistant to various diseases and pests, which makes it relatively easy to cultivate. The grape produces small, compact clusters of dark blue to black berries.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

Refošk wines are typically deep in color, with high acidity and tannin levels. They are known for their distinctive flavors of dark fruit, such as blackberries and plums, as well as notes of spice and earth. These wines are often aged in oak barrels to enhance their complexity and longevity.

Food Pairing[edit | edit source]

Due to its high acidity and tannin levels, Refošk pairs well with rich, fatty foods. It is often served with traditional Istrian dishes, such as prosciutto and truffle-infused pasta.
