Rehabilitation is a specialized healthcare discipline that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. This term, most often, refers to physical therapy that is used to help people recover from injuries and surgeries. However, it can also refer to mental health rehabilitation.

Types of Rehabilitation[edit | edit source]

Rehabilitation can be categorized into different types based on the area of focus. These include:

  • Physical Rehabilitation: This involves therapeutic exercises and manual therapy techniques to improve the patient's physical strength, mobility, and function.
  • Occupational Rehabilitation: This focuses on helping people with mental, physical, developmental, or emotional disabilities to live independently.
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation: This is designed to help patients recover from heart surgery, heart attacks, or other heart diseases.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation: This is a program for people who have chronic lung diseases.
  • Neurological Rehabilitation: This is a complex medical process which aims to aid recovery from a nervous system injury.

A rehabilitation team often consists of various healthcare professionals including:

  • Physiatrists: Doctors who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
  • Physical Therapists: Healthcare professionals who can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility.
  • Occupational Therapists: Professionals who help people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities.
  • Speech-Language Pathologists: Professionals who diagnose and treat communication and swallowing disorders.
