Relaxer

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Relaxer is a type of chemical treatment used to permanently straighten curly hair. The process involves the application of a strong alkaline or acidic solution to the hair, which breaks down the natural protein structure of the hair, making it easier to reshape. Relaxers are commonly used in hair care routines, particularly among individuals with African-textured hair.

Types of Relaxers[edit | edit source]

There are three main types of relaxers:

  • Lye Relaxers: These contain sodium hydroxide and are known for their effectiveness in straightening hair. However, they can be harsh on the scalp and hair if not used properly.
  • No-Lye Relaxers: These contain calcium hydroxide and guanidine carbonate. They are gentler on the scalp but can leave a calcium buildup on the hair, which may require additional treatments to remove.
  • Thio Relaxers: These contain ammonium thioglycolate and are less damaging than lye and no-lye relaxers. They are often used in permanent wave treatments as well.

Application Process[edit | edit source]

The application of a relaxer involves several steps:

  1. Preparation: The hair is sectioned and a protective base cream is applied to the scalp to prevent irritation.
  2. Application: The relaxer is applied to the hair, avoiding the scalp, and left on for a specific amount of time depending on the hair's texture and the desired level of straightness.
  3. Rinsing: The relaxer is thoroughly rinsed out with warm water.
  4. Neutralizing: A neutralizing shampoo is used to restore the hair's natural pH balance and stop the chemical process.
  5. Conditioning: A deep conditioner is applied to restore moisture and strength to the hair.
