The Republic of Artsakh (
, Artsakhi Hanrapetut’yun), also known as Nagorno-Karabakh, is a de facto independent republic located in the South Caucasus region. It is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but it has been governed by ethnic Armenians since the Nagorno-Karabakh War.
History[edit | edit source]
The region of Nagorno-Karabakh has a long and complex history, with various powers controlling it over the centuries, including the Persian Empire, the Russian Empire, and the Soviet Union. The modern conflict began in the late 1980s, as the Soviet Union was dissolving. Ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh sought to unify with Armenia, leading to a violent conflict with Azerbaijan.
In 1991, the Republic of Artsakh declared independence, but this has not been recognized by any United Nations member states. The Nagorno-Karabakh War ended in 1994 with a ceasefire, but the region remains a point of contention between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The Republic of Artsakh is located in the mountainous region of the South Caucasus. It is bordered by Armenia to the west, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran to the south. The capital and largest city is Stepanakert.
Government and Politics[edit | edit source]
The Republic of Artsakh has a presidential system of government. The President is both the head of state and the head of government. The National Assembly is the legislative body, and it is composed of members elected by the citizens of Artsakh.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Artsakh is primarily based on agriculture, mining, and some light industry. Due to its unrecognized status, the region faces significant economic challenges, including limited access to international markets.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
The population of Artsakh is predominantly ethnic Armenian. The official language is Armenian, and the majority of the population adheres to the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Artsakh has a rich cultural heritage, with numerous historical monuments, churches, and monasteries. The region is known for its traditional music, dance, and cuisine.
