The Carter House Inn was established in the early 1980s by Mark and Anne Carter. The inn was inspired by the original plans of a Victorian mansion designed by the renowned architect Samuel Newsom. The original mansion, known as the Murphy House, was built in 1884 in San Francisco, California, but was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire.

In 1982, the Carters discovered the original plans for the Murphy House and decided to reconstruct the building in Eureka. The reconstruction was completed in 1984, and the inn has since become a landmark in the area, attracting visitors from around the world.
