Restaurant Uno is a popular chain of pizzerias and casual dining restaurants in the United States. It was founded in 1943 by Ike Sewell and Ric Riccardo in Chicago, Illinois. Uno is known for its deep-dish pizza, which has become a signature dish of the restaurant.

History[edit | edit source]

Uno Pizzeria & Grill, originally named Pizzeria Uno, opened its doors on December 3, 1943, in Chicago's Near North Side. Ike Sewell, a former University of Texas football star, and Ric Riccardo, a friend and former partner, decided to create a new type of pizza that would stand out from the traditional thin-crust pizzas commonly found in the area.

Sewell and Riccardo developed a deep-dish pizza recipe that featured a thick, buttery crust, chunky tomato sauce, and generous amounts of cheese and toppings. This unique style of pizza quickly gained popularity and became the signature dish of Pizzeria Uno.

Over the years, Pizzeria Uno expanded its menu to include a variety of other Italian-American dishes, such as pasta, salads, and sandwiches. The restaurant also introduced a range of specialty pizzas, including the famous Chicago-style deep-dish pizza with various toppings.

In 1979, Pizzeria Uno opened its first franchise location in Boston, Massachusetts, under the name Uno Chicago Grill. The success of this franchise led to further expansion across the United States, and the restaurant chain eventually changed its name to Uno Pizzeria & Grill to reflect its broader menu offerings.

Menu[edit | edit source]

Uno Pizzeria & Grill offers a diverse menu that caters to a wide range of tastes. While their deep-dish pizza remains a customer favorite, the restaurant also serves thin-crust pizzas, flatbreads, pasta dishes, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and appetizers.

  • Margherita Thin Crust Pizza: A thin and crispy crust topped with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, basil, and olive oil.
  • BBQ Chicken Flatbread: Grilled chicken, red onions, mozzarella cheese, and barbecue sauce on a crispy flatbread.
  • Classic Caesar Salad: Romaine lettuce, Parmesan cheese, croutons, and Caesar dressing.
  • Bacon Cheddar Burger: A juicy burger topped with bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickles.
