Restaurants du Cœur
Restaurants du Cœur (commonly known as Les Restos du Cœur) is a French charitable organization that distributes food packages and hot meals to those in need. It was founded by the comedian Coluche in 1985.
History[edit | edit source]
The organization was established in response to the increasing poverty and homelessness in France during the 1980s. Coluche envisioned a place where people could come to receive a free meal and support. The first campaign was launched in the winter of 1985-1986, and it quickly gained national attention and support.
Mission[edit | edit source]
The primary mission of Restaurants du Cœur is to provide food aid to the most disadvantaged individuals and families. The organization also offers various forms of social and economic support, including assistance with housing, employment, and legal issues.
Operations[edit | edit source]
Restaurants du Cœur operates through a network of volunteers and local centers across France. These centers distribute food packages and serve hot meals. The organization relies heavily on donations from individuals, businesses, and other organizations.
Campaigns and Events[edit | edit source]
The organization is well-known for its annual winter campaign, which runs from November to March. During this period, the need for food aid is particularly high due to the cold weather. Additionally, Restaurants du Cœur organizes various fundraising events, including concerts and telethons, to support its activities.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Since its inception, Restaurants du Cœur has provided millions of meals to those in need. The organization has become a symbol of solidarity and social support in France. It has also inspired similar initiatives in other countries.
