Retagliado bianco
Retagliado bianco is a white Italian wine grape variety that is grown in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeast Italy. The grape is also known under the synonym of Tocai Friulano.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of Retagliado bianco are not clear, but it is believed to have been cultivated in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region for many centuries. The grape is often confused with Sauvignon blanc and Verdicchio, due to its similar characteristics and flavor profile.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
Retagliado bianco is a mid-ripening grape variety that is typically harvested in late September. The grape has a natural high acidity and potential for high sugar levels, which makes it suitable for both dry and sweet wine production. It is resistant to most vine diseases, but can be susceptible to botrytis cinerea, a type of fungus that causes noble rot.
Wine regions[edit | edit source]
Retagliado bianco is primarily grown in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, particularly in the provinces of Udine and Gorizia. The grape is also found in the Veneto region, although it is less common.
Wines[edit | edit source]
Wines made from Retagliado bianco are typically full-bodied with high acidity. They often have flavors of green apple, pear, and almond, with a characteristic bitter finish. These wines are often aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve their freshness and acidity, although some producers also age their wines in oak barrels to add complexity.
Food pairing[edit | edit source]
Due to its high acidity and full-bodied nature, Retagliado bianco wines pair well with a variety of foods. They are particularly good with seafood, white meats, and creamy pasta dishes.
Synonyms[edit | edit source]
Apart from Tocai Friulano, Retagliado bianco is also known under the synonyms of Malvasia bianca, Trebbiano, and Verduzzo.
