Retainer

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Retainer is a custom-made orthodontic device typically made of wires or clear plastic that holds teeth in position after surgery or any method of realigning teeth. They are most often used before or after dental braces to keep teeth in position while assisting the adjustment of the surrounding gums to changes in the bone. Most patients are required to wear their retainer(s) every night at first, with many also being directed to wear them during the day - at least initially. There are four types of retainers typically prescribed by orthodontists and dentists: Hawley, Essix, Zendura, and Bonded (Fixed) retainers.

Types of Retainers[edit | edit source]

Hawley Retainers[edit | edit source]

The Hawley retainer is one of the oldest types of retainers. It is a removable retainer made of a combination of metal wires and sturdy acrylic, and is designed to keep your teeth in place. This type of retainer is simple, durable, and easily removed.

Essix Retainers[edit | edit source]

The Essix retainer is a transparent removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of teeth. Similar to Invisalign trays, Essix retainers have no metal or wires. They can also be used to produce minor tooth movements and can be helpful in prevention of tooth wear due to tooth grinding at night.

Zendura Retainers[edit | edit source]

Zendura is a type of material used in making dental retainers. It is a clear, highly durable plastic, known for its superior strength and resilience compared to other retainer materials.

Bonded (Fixed) Retainers[edit | edit source]

Bonded retainers, also known as fixed retainers, are wires bonded behind the teeth. This type of retainer is sometimes recommended when there's a high risk that teeth could revert to their former position.

Care and Maintenance[edit | edit source]

Retainers need to be cleaned regularly to remove plaque and eliminate odors. It's recommended to clean retainers with a toothbrush or a retainer cleaner. It's important not to use hot water as it can warp the retainer.
