Rhododendron mucronulatum
Rhododendron mucronulatum is a species of rhododendron native to eastern Siberia, Mongolia, Korea, and northern China. It is a deciduous shrub that typically grows to 4-8’ tall and as wide. It is particularly noted for its early spring bloom of lavender to pink flowers and its winter hardiness.
Description[edit | edit source]
Rhododendron mucronulatum, commonly known as Korean rhododendron or Korean rosebay, is a deciduous rhododendron species. The plant typically grows to a height of 4-8 feet and spreads equally wide. The leaves are elliptic to oblong and are about 2-4 inches long. The flowers are 1-2 inches wide and are typically lavender to pink in color, although there are some cultivars with white flowers.
Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]
Rhododendron mucronulatum is native to eastern Siberia, Mongolia, Korea, and northern China. It is found in the wild in mountainous areas, often in the understory of deciduous forests. It prefers well-drained, acidic soils and can tolerate full sun to partial shade.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Rhododendron mucronulatum is cultivated as an ornamental plant for its early spring bloom. It is one of the earliest blooming rhododendrons and can often be seen in flower in late winter or early spring. The plant is winter hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit. It is also relatively disease resistant and is not typically bothered by pests.
Varieties and cultivars[edit | edit source]
There are several varieties and cultivars of Rhododendron mucronulatum available in the horticultural trade. These include 'Cornell Pink', which has bright pink flowers, and 'White Angel', which has white flowers.
Uses[edit | edit source]
In addition to its use as an ornamental plant, Rhododendron mucronulatum is also used in traditional medicine in some parts of its native range. However, like all rhododendrons, it contains toxic compounds and should not be ingested.
