Rhododendron spinuliferum
Rhododendron spinuliferum is a species of flowering plant in the family Ericaceae. It is native to southwestern China, specifically in the provinces of Guizhou, Sichuan, and Yunnan. This species is notable for its unique floral morphology and its adaptability to various environmental conditions.
Description[edit | edit source]
Rhododendron spinuliferum is an evergreen shrub that typically grows to a height of 1-2 meters. The leaves are lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, measuring 3-7 cm in length and 1-2 cm in width. They are leathery in texture and have a dark green coloration on the upper surface, with a paler underside.
The flowers of Rhododendron spinuliferum are distinctive due to their tubular shape and bright red color. Each flower measures approximately 2-3 cm in length and is borne in clusters of 6-12. The blooming period occurs from April to May. The fruit is a dry capsule that splits open when mature to release numerous small seeds.
Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]
Rhododendron spinuliferum is found in forested areas, often on slopes and in ravines, at altitudes ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. It thrives in well-drained, acidic soils and prefers partial shade to full sun.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
This species is cultivated for ornamental purposes due to its attractive flowers and foliage. It requires a cool, moist climate and is best grown in regions with mild summers and cold winters. Propagation is typically achieved through seed or cuttings.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
The conservation status of Rhododendron spinuliferum has not been extensively studied, but habitat loss due to deforestation and land development poses potential threats to its natural populations.
