Emil Richterich established the company in Laufen, Switzerland in 1930. The name Ricola is derived from Richterich & Co. Laufen. Initially, the company produced natural remedies, but later shifted its focus to herbal cough drops and breath mints.

The herbs include peppermint, lemon balm, thyme, sage, marshmallow, elder, cowslip, speedwell, lady's mantle, horehound, mallow, yarrow, and plantain.
