Riesling Italico

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Riesling Italico is a white grape variety used in the production of white wine. It is also known as Welschriesling, Olaszrizling, Laški Rizling, and Graševina. Despite its name, it is not related to the more famous Riesling grape.

Origin and Distribution[edit | edit source]

The origins of Riesling Italico are uncertain, but it is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region. It is widely grown in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in Hungary, Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, and Italy. In Italy, it is primarily grown in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige regions.

Viticulture and Winemaking[edit | edit source]

Riesling Italico is a hardy grape variety that can adapt to a variety of soil types and climates. It is typically harvested late in the season to allow the grapes to fully ripen and develop their characteristic flavors. The wines produced from Riesling Italico can range from dry to sweet, and they often have high acidity and notes of green apple, citrus, and floral aromas.

Food Pairing[edit | edit source]

Riesling Italico wines are versatile and can be paired with a variety of dishes. They are particularly well-suited to seafood, poultry, and light pasta dishes. The high acidity of the wines also makes them a good match for rich, creamy sauces.
