Riskrem
Riskrem is a traditional Norwegian dessert, typically served during the Christmas season. The name 'Riskrem' is derived from the Norwegian words 'ris', meaning rice, and 'krem', meaning cream. It is a type of rice pudding, made from leftover rice porridge (risgrøt) and whipped cream, sweetened with sugar and flavored with vanilla.
Ingredients and Preparation[edit | edit source]
The main ingredients of Riskrem are rice, milk, sugar, vanilla, and whipped cream. The dish begins with the preparation of rice porridge, which is made by boiling rice in milk until it becomes soft and creamy. The porridge is then cooled and mixed with whipped cream, sugar, and vanilla to create a light and fluffy dessert. Some variations of Riskrem may also include chopped almonds or other nuts for added texture and flavor.
Traditions[edit | edit source]
Riskrem is a staple dessert in Norwegian Christmas celebrations. It is often served after the main course of ribbe (pork ribs) or pinnekjøtt (lamb ribs). A popular tradition associated with serving Riskrem during Christmas is the 'almond present'. A whole almond is hidden in the pudding and the person who finds the almond in their serving is said to have good luck in the coming year. They may also receive a small gift or prize.
Variations[edit | edit source]
While the traditional Riskrem is made with rice porridge, there are also variations of the dessert made with other grains such as barley or semolina. These versions are known as 'byggrynskrem' and 'semulegrynskrem' respectively.
