The River Benue is a major river in West Africa, serving as the principal tributary of the Niger River. It flows through Cameroon and Nigeria, playing a crucial role in the hydrology, economy, and culture of the region.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The River Benue originates from the Adamawa Plateau in northern Cameroon, at an elevation of approximately 1,340 meters (4,396 feet). It travels a distance of about 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) before joining the Niger River at Lokoja, Nigeria. The river's basin covers an area of approximately 319,000 square kilometers, encompassing parts of Cameroon and Nigeria.

The River Benue is characterized by a seasonal flow pattern, with the highest water levels occurring during the rainy season from May to October. The river's average discharge at Lokoja is about 3,400 cubic meters per second (120,000 cubic feet per second). The river is navigable for most of its length, providing a vital waterway for transportation and trade.
